Abstract

Broadband wireless Internet will represent the convergence of the two most important phenomena in Information Technology in the last decade: the growth of the Internet and mobile telephony. Wireless technology will play a significant role in shaping the future evolution of our computing/communications infrastructure, and will have profound implications for the industry structure of the ICT industries. This paper compares and contrasts two technologies: 3G cellular and WiFi WLAN. These two technologies are simultaneously complements and substitutes, and offer quite different paths for the future development of the broadband wireless Internet.
